What is Cortance?
Cortance is a platform for hiring vetted developers on-demand.
Are all Cortance developers publicly listed on the platform?
Cortance's platform is public, but not all the developers are listed on the platform publicly. Only developers decide whether they want to be unmasked to attract more client interest and opportunities or anonymized.
How are you different from a regular outstaff company?
Cortance is different from a typical outstaff company in a few key ways:
- Flexible project options: Our platform allows you to choose between short-term and long-term projects that align with your interests. If a project we suggest on our platform doesn't seem like a good fit, you can decline it or just not apply to it, looking forward to more suitable proposals;
- Streamlined hiring process: We don't drag out the hiring process for months or put candidates through an extensive series of interviews. Our assessment is efficient while still ensuring a good match;
- Faster onboarding: Unlike some outstaff providers, we don't have lengthy delays before you can start work.
The flexibility to select preferred projects, coupled with a more straightforward hiring experience, sets Cortance apart from a traditional outstaff company model. We're focused on quickly connecting talented freelancers with the right opportunities for them.
How do I apply to work on the project?
Once you pass our recruitment process and get access to the Cortance community, there are two options to apply to the project:
- to find experience-aligned opportunities in a platform and apply to it;
- to receive a personal experience-aligned opportunity invitation and confirm it.
If a match happens and either you and the client are happy with the proposal, you start working directly with the client using their communication channels.
How are you different from average outstaffing or the other freelance platforms?
What sets us apart:
- Vetting process. Programmers can't just walk in. Unlike other platforms, we personally vet every developer through our rigorous evaluation process, where they must hack our three gates: subject matter expertise, professionalism, and communication skills. No amateurs on the platform.
- Immediate request processing. If you haven’t found the perfect fit among proposed on the platform engineers or just do not have time to surf the platform, leave us a request and receive an immediate developers proposal.
We always aim at battle-tested talent who can actually start right away and build what you need.
How can I become a Cortance freelancer, and how long will it take?
After applying, the hiring process involves several assessment stages - CV screening, expectation alignment, and personal profile on the Cortance platform creation.
After all general check-ins on our side, there are a Communication & Character Assessment and a tech interview, which includes two parts: passing tricky technical assessments to evaluate both the breadth and depth of your expertise and Expert-Led Live Evaluation to showcase your ability to solve complex problems under pressure, communicate technical concepts clearly, and apply creative solutions to real-world scenarios. This comprehensive approach helps ensure a good fit.
When all the stages are passed, we start looking for a project for you. The project-seeking timeline can vary, but is typically around 1-2 weeks, depending on the candidate's skills and availability of relevant projects.
There may be some response delays if there is a high demand from other applicants or a lack of current project needs in the candidate's specific tech stack. But Cortance commits to providing feedback at each stage. The live evaluation is an important part of the assessment to gauge the candidate's real-world problem-solving and communication skills under pressure, but if we see that there are no projects related to your tech stack, Expert-Led Live Evaluation could be postponed and led when we see market demand.
How quickly can you find me a project?
The project-seeking timeline can vary but is typically around 1-2 weeks, depending on the popularity of your technologies, your skills, availability, and whether you are full-time or part-time ready. The rate also affects it. It may take longer if your rate is high.
Is there a minimum number of project involvement?
We're flexible with time commitments but recommend a minimum of 20 hours per week to maintain project momentum. Most clients choose either:
- Full-time (40 hours/week): Ideal for fast-moving projects and complete team integration;
- Part-time (20 hours/week): Perfect for ongoing development needs with balanced budgets.
Our goal is to match your project's pace and budget, not force you into a fixed box.
How do you vet the developers?
Each applicant to the Cortance network must pass our rigorous three-step evaluation to measure subject matter expertise, professionalism, and communication skills, ensuring you work with true engineering excellence.
These steps include:
- CV and portfolio evaluation;
- background and identity check;
- oral and written English proficiency tests;
- coding test task;
- live interview.
What are your criteria for choosing freelancers?
When it comes to bringing on new development talent, we have some non-negotiable criteria to ensure we deliver the highest caliber of service:
- You have a minimum of 3 years of proven commercial experience;
- You have strong English proficiency and can communicate clearly and confidently, both in writing and during interviews;
- You can commit to at least 20 hours per week, with a preference for full-time, 40-hour availability.
How should I determine my rate?
If you’re new to hourly rates and aren’t sure where to start, we suggest dividing your current or most recent monthly salary by 168 (the average number of work hours in a month) to get an approximate figure.
We’ll confirm your rate with you before offering any projects. This will be your default rate for projects on our platform, but you’ll have the option to adjust it up or down when considering a specific project.
Is your platform public? Can my current employer see me there?
Cortance's platform is public, but we automatically anonymize your profile data and photos by default. This keeps your participation discreet from your current employer. However, an unmasked profile with your full information tends to attract more client interest and opportunities. The choice is yours - we enable you to control the level of public exposure.
What technologies do you work with?
We commonly have PHP and JavaScript-related languages, React Native, Flutter, Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin, Python, RoR, Data Science, Java, C# related languages, C++, RUST, Web3, Golang, and DevOps on tap. But let us know what particular stack you are looking for and we will try to cover it.
How experienced are your developers?
Our vetting process ensures every Cortance developer meets a minimum of 3 years of commercial experience. But the true strength of our talent pool runs much deeper - the average developer on our roster boasts an impressive 6 years of real-world, hands-on experience.

Whether it's an 80-hour sprint or a multi-year marathon, we're in.
Fun fact: Most teams stick with their Cortance developers for 6+ months. Why? Because once you find a dev who gets your vision, you don't let go. Some partnerships have been coding strong for years.
Can I get a project estimation before the start?
No, we do not provide project estimations due to our cooperation model.
