AI will not replace app developers, though it is already writing a real share of the code inside their projects. GitHub's 2025 Octoverse report found that in repositories where Copilot is active, AI generates an average of 46 percent of the code, and developers keep 88 percent of those suggestions in their final commits.
Why does it look like AI is taking over mobile development?
Most of what AI handles well in mobile projects is screen layout and repetitive boilerplate, the parts of an app that look similar across thousands of open source repos. Coding models are trained on far more JavaScript and TypeScript than Swift or Kotlin, so a React Native or Flutter screen gets stronger suggestions than a native iOS view controller or an Android background service. That gap is why AI can feel impressive on a demo screen and then stall on push notification handling or a custom camera integration.
What does the current data say about AI and developers?
The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey found that 84 percent of developers now use or plan to use AI tools, up from 76 percent the year before. Trust moved the opposite direction: only 29 percent said they trust the accuracy of AI output, down from 40 percent in 2024, and 46 percent said they actively distrust it. Two-thirds of respondents (66 percent) described AI answers as close but ultimately missing the mark, and 45 percent said debugging AI-generated code takes longer than writing it themselves.
What does this mean for hiring mobile developers?
Teams still need engineers who understand App Store and Play Store review requirements and the platform APIs that AI tools cover unevenly. The higher AI's output share in a codebase, the more time senior developers spend reviewing and correcting that output rather than typing less. Hiring plans built around fewer mobile developers because AI writes the code now tend to underestimate how much review and native integration work still falls on a person.
