Hire PHP Developers who make legacy code safe or build from scratch

PHP experience isn't one skill. A developer who has spent eight years shipping Laravel SaaS features and one who has spent eight years hardening a Symfony fintech core have almost nothing in common day-to-day. When we vet someone for a specific PHP need, which specialization they've built inside PHP matters as much as the language itself, and it's usually what decides both the rate and how fast we can put a shortlist together.

Which specialization moves the rate?

Laravel is the most common framework in our PHP network: 33 of the 67 PHP projects our engineers have delivered run on it. It is also the framework most clients reach for on a new SaaS build. Symfony sits at the other end. It shows up in 12 of those 67 projects, concentrated in codebases where Doctrine ORM, complex domain models and integration with older enterprise systems matter more than shipping speed. That's the kind of judgment a fintech company, or one with years of existing Symfony investment, needs. Fewer engineers in our network specialize in it, and a smaller pool with shipped Symfony work beats filtering through profiles that list the framework without having built anything serious in it.

Pairing PHP with cloud infrastructure work moves the rate more than almost anything else we see. PHP developers hired through Cortance typically cost $35 to $48 an hour, and engineers who combine PHP with AWS, containerised deployment and CI/CD sit toward the top of that range. That gap tracks a shift in the work itself: a company that has already moved off manual deploys into ECS, scheduled Lambda jobs and S3 storage needs someone who has done that migration before, not someone learning it during the engagement.

A second recurring pattern is PHP paired with a modern frontend, usually Vue rather than React in our network. Of our 24 PHP engineers, 11 have Vue.js on their PHP projects, typically a PHP API behind a JavaScript single-page app. It is usually part of a legacy rebuild, where the backend stays PHP but the interface gets rewritten, sometimes with PostgreSQL replacing MySQL underneath. That's as much an architecture decision as a specialisation, and it is common enough that we don't treat it as an unusual request.

Two smaller specializations are worth naming even though fewer engineers cover them: custom payment integration for processors that don't fit a standard Stripe or Cashier flow, and adding AI features onto an existing PHP platform instead of rebuilding it. Both tend to pay a premium because few PHP developers have done the non-standard version of either job. On the AI side, three engineers in our PHP network have used Claude Code on production PHP projects, a small number today.

What counts as modern PHP now

The senior bar keeps moving. PHP 8.5 shipped in November 2025 with a pipe operator for chaining function calls left to right, and a clone-with syntax for modifying a property on a readonly object without rebuilding it. Both build on the property hooks and asymmetric visibility PHP 8.4 introduced the year before. Laravel followed in March 2026 with version 13, built for PHP 8.3 and up, and Symfony's current line now requires PHP 8.4 outright. Someone comfortable in a pre-8 codebase but untouched by any of that is doing maintenance work, which is needed, but it isn't the same hire as someone building on the current toolchain. That's the distinction we're screening for when a client asks for "a PHP developer" without saying which kind.

That toolchain has closed a lot of the distance that used to separate PHP from Node or Python: Composer for dependencies, Pest for tests that read like plain English instead of PHPUnit boilerplate, and observability that used to mean bolting on a third-party service now built into the frameworks themselves. When we vet a PHP developer for a modern build, we check for fluency with that stack specifically, not just a raw years-of-PHP number, since the two increasingly don't move together.
