Rust's own compiler, rustc, is written in Rust itself. It is self-hosted: the current compiler is built using an earlier version of itself, a chain that traces back to the first prototype compiler, which was written in OCaml before Rust could compile its own source. For code generation, rustc hands off to LLVM, a backend written in C++.
