Symfony and Twig are not two competing options, they are two layers of the same PHP stack: Symfony, first released by Fabien Potencier in 2005, is the framework that handles routing, dependency injection, and business logic, while Twig, the template language Symfony has bundled as its default renderer since Symfony2 in 2011, turns that data into HTML.
What does each one actually do?
Symfony's job stops at logic: routing incoming requests, talking to the database through Doctrine, validating form input, and dispatching events between services. Twig's job starts where Symfony's ends. It takes the variables a controller passes to it and renders them into an HTML page, with its own syntax for loops, conditionals, and template inheritance so a header or footer can be written once and reused across pages.
Can Twig be used without Symfony?
Yes. Twig is installed separately through Composer as the symfony/twig-bundle package rather than compiled into Symfony's core, and it runs in projects that have nothing to do with the Symfony framework. Drupal has used Twig as its templating layer since Drupal 8 in 2015, and Craft CMS ships with Twig too, even though neither runs on the full Symfony framework the way a typical Symfony application does.
Can Symfony run without Twig?
Yes, though it's rare in practice. Symfony can render plain PHP templates or return JSON directly from a controller for an API-only project, and Twig only gets pulled in when the twig-bundle package is required. Most full-stack Symfony applications keep Twig anyway because it is the templating layer the framework's own documentation and starter skeleton default to.
Which one do you actually need to learn?
Anyone doing backend work in a Symfony project, such as routing, services, or database logic, needs to learn Symfony itself. Anyone editing what a page looks like, adjusting a loop in a product listing or changing a layout block, is working in Twig syntax, not Symfony's PHP. On a typical Symfony team the two are learned together, not weighed against each other.
