What is the difference between Chef and Docker?

Chef and Docker serve different purposes. Chef automates how you set up and manage your servers’ configurations. Docker is for containerising applications - putting apps and all they need into containers so they can run anywhere or in any environment. Chef manages your infrastructure’s setup, while Docker wraps your app in a portable container. Many teams use both, with Chef for configuration and Docker for application deployment.
