Will AI replace MATLAB developers?
AI will not replace MATLAB developers, though it is reshaping the day-to-day work faster than most engineering tools have. MathWorks shipped its own generative AI assistant, MATLAB Copilot, with R2025b in 2025, then extended the same approach to Simulink and Polyspace in the R2026a release earlier this year.
What does AI already automate in MATLAB work?
MATLAB Copilot writes code from natural language prompts, suggests completions as you type, and explains unfamiliar scripts inline in the editor.
It can also generate starter tests and equivalence tests through MATLAB Test, add comments to legacy code, and translate cryptic error messages into plain explanations.
R2026a added Simulink Copilot for model-based design tasks and Polyspace Copilot for static code analysis, plus a MATLAB MCP Server that lets external AI agents call MATLAB and Simulink functions directly.
None of this requires deep MATLAB expertise to use, which is why routine scripting and boilerplate model setup are moving fastest toward automation.
What still needs a MATLAB developer?
Safety-critical work is the clearest limit. MathWorks tools including MATLAB, Simulink, Embedded Coder, and Polyspace are certified by TÜV SÜD against ISO 26262 for ASIL A-D, and DO-178C's DO-331 supplement covers model-based development for airborne software.
Certifying the tool is not the same as certifying the model: a qualified engineer still has to write the requirements, judge whether simulation output matches real physical behavior, and sign the verification evidence.
Control system tuning and signal processing calibration also stay human territory, because Copilot can propose a filter or controller structure but cannot decide whether the trade-off it picked fits the actual hardware constraints.
Debugging cases where a model runs without error but produces physically wrong results is another area AI tools consistently miss, since spotting that gap depends on domain knowledge the assistant does not have.
What should you prioritize when hiring a MATLAB developer?
Prioritize engineers who treat Copilot output as a draft to check, not a finished answer, especially on anything that touches Simulink models headed for certification.
Toolbox-specific depth matters more than general MATLAB syntax; look for hands-on experience with Control System Toolbox, Signal Processing Toolbox, or Simscape depending on the project, since AI-generated code rarely gets toolbox-specific numerical choices right on the first pass.
If the role touches ISO 26262 or DO-178C workflows, verification and certification experience matters as much as coding skill, since no AI assistant can take responsibility for that sign-off.
