In 2009, MySQL's original developers forked MariaDB from MySQL's codebase after Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems, MySQL's owner at the time, and built it to stay compatible with MySQL's wire protocol. That compatibility still covers most standard SQL and tooling today, but it narrows once an application depends on features either database added after the split.
