They matter most for applications that cannot tolerate a stalled chain even briefly, such as liquidations, derivatives settlement, or payment rails, and for teams comparing Solana against Ethereum, where a larger and more geographically spread validator set is usually cited as the more conservative choice for decentralization-sensitive work. Solana's tooling and library ecosystem is growing quickly but is still smaller than Ethereum's, so teams often find fewer audited reference implementations for niche use cases.
