Are there better alternatives to VirtualBox?
Not universally: VirtualBox is still the only major hypervisor that's both free and cross-platform across Windows, macOS, and Linux, though VMware Workstation and Parallels beat it on graphics performance and polish, and Hyper-V wins for Windows-only server workloads already on Microsoft infrastructure.
When does an alternative make more sense?
VMware Workstation Pro supports DirectX 11 and generally handles GPU-heavy work like CAD or video editing better than VirtualBox's VMSVGA-based 3D acceleration. On a Mac, Parallels has supported Apple Silicon natively since 2020, years before VirtualBox added it in version 7.1. On Windows Server or in an existing Microsoft-heavy shop, Hyper-V's built-in cluster tooling handles fleet management that VirtualBox has no real equivalent for. For running many VMs on dedicated server hardware rather than a laptop, Proxmox VE is another common alternative, a free, open-source, bare-metal hypervisor with a web-based cluster manager built in, something VirtualBox was never designed to be.
When does VirtualBox stay the right call?
For cross-platform test images that need to open the same way on a Windows, Linux, or macOS host, VirtualBox's free, open-source license and broad host support are hard to match, since Parallels only runs on macOS and Hyper-V only runs on Windows. Teams already scripting VM builds through VBoxManage, or running mixed-OS CI images, generally have little reason to switch, since rebuilding that automation around a different tool costs more than any performance gain would save.
How should a team decide?
The deciding factor is usually the host operating system and the workload, not a general quality ranking. A single-OS shop with GPU-heavy work benefits from switching to VMware or Parallels; a team needing free, portable VMs across different host machines is usually better off staying on VirtualBox.
