Which is better: Zabbix or Grafana?

Zabbix and Grafana are not really rivals: Zabbix collects monitoring data and fires alerts, while Grafana visualizes data collected by other tools, including Zabbix. Grafana connects to Zabbix through an official data source plugin, originally built by Alexander Zobnin and now distributed via Grafana Labs, that queries Zabbix's history and trend tables directly.

Where does the "which is better" question come from?

The confusion happens because Zabbix ships its own built-in graphs, network maps, and dashboards, so on the surface it looks like it competes with Grafana for the same screen. Both tools also get grouped together in generic "monitoring stack" lists, which pushes people to frame them as alternatives rather than as pieces that solve different problems.

What actually separates them technically?

Zabbix gathers metrics itself, through its own agents, SNMP polling, and proxies, then stores them in a backend database and evaluates them against configurable triggers to send notifications by email, Slack, PagerDuty, or custom scripts. Grafana has no collection layer of its own. It queries data sources through plugins, commonly Prometheus, InfluxDB, Elasticsearch, and PostgreSQL, and renders that data as interactive, drag-and-drop dashboards that can pull from several sources at once. Zabbix's native graphs are functional but limited to Zabbix's own data; Grafana's dashboards are more flexible for drilling into data and combining sources, but only if something else, such as Zabbix, is already collecting that data.

What does this mean for building or hiring a monitoring stack?

Many teams run Zabbix for collection and alerting, then layer Grafana on top for richer or cross-source dashboards, while smaller setups often stick with Zabbix's own frontend and skip Grafana entirely if they never need to correlate data from multiple systems. For a DevOps or SRE role, this means the job usually spans both tools rather than requiring a choice between them: configuring Zabbix items, triggers, and notifications on one side, and building or maintaining Grafana dashboards and queries on the other. Someone hired to "improve monitoring" should be expected to touch both, since one typically feeds the other instead of replacing it.
