What are the main components of AWS?

AWS is a collection of separately billed services covering compute, storage, databases, and networking; no single service defines it. EC2 provides virtual servers, S3 handles object storage, RDS and DynamoDB cover relational and NoSQL databases, Lambda runs code without a managed server, and a VPC with IAM handles networking and access control. AWS launched EC2 and S3 in 2006, and each component still scales and bills independently today.

What does this breadth actually mean for you?

AWS offers more than 200 services in total, but a typical application only touches a handful of them. The practical skill is knowing which handful fits the job in front of you, not memorizing the full catalog. A content-heavy marketing site needs different building blocks than a real-time trading system, even though both run on the same underlying platform.

Where do these components typically get combined?

A common pattern for a web application: static assets sit in S3 and reach users through a CDN, the application logic runs on EC2, ECS, or Lambda depending on how steady the traffic is, RDS or DynamoDB stores the data, and a VPC with IAM policies controls what can talk to what. Route 53 handles DNS, and CloudWatch collects logs and metrics once the other pieces are running. None of these services need the others to function, but production systems rarely rely on just one in isolation.

What should you keep in mind before combining them?

Each service has its own pricing model and its own scaling behavior, so combining five components means tracking five separate sets of limits and costs rather than one line item. IAM is the layer most teams underestimate: a service that is technically reachable but not permissioned correctly fails in a way that looks like a networking bug rather than an access problem. Start with the smallest set of components that solves the actual problem, and add more only when a specific requirement calls for it, not general caution.
