What are the main disadvantages of Dart for app development?

Dart's real disadvantages come down to one thing: outside Flutter, almost nobody uses it. Google pitched Dart in 2011 as a JavaScript alternative, and it went nowhere until Flutter adopted it in 2017, so the language and its tooling are built around a single framework rather than a broad ecosystem. That's fine for most app teams, and a real limitation for a few specific use cases.

When do the drawbacks stop mattering?

For teams building mobile apps, cross-platform desktop tools, or web front ends with Flutter, Dart's narrow scope isn't really a cost. You get one language across Android, iOS, web, and desktop targets, and the tight coupling with Flutter keeps the tooling consistent everywhere, hot reload, null safety, and DevTools all work the same way regardless of target platform. The current stable release, Dart 3.12.1, shipped in May 2026 with features aimed squarely at app developers, such as private named parameters, rather than chasing general-purpose language features.

Does the smaller package count actually bite day to day? Rarely, for typical app work. Flutter's own plugin ecosystem covers the common needs, HTTP calls, state management, local storage, camera access, maps, so most teams never go looking for a package that doesn't exist.

When are they a dealbreaker?

Problems show up once you try to use Dart for anything beyond a Flutter client. pub.dev lists somewhere around 55,000 packages, next to npm's more than 3 million, so anything niche, a specific cloud SDK, a message queue client, a machine learning library, may not exist yet or may be maintained by a single volunteer. Server-side Dart, through packages like Shelf, technically works, but it stays a niche choice. Most Flutter shops still put a Node.js, Go, or Java service behind the app instead of writing the backend in Dart.

Is the small community itself a hiring risk? Only if you're hiring for Dart work outside Flutter. Developers who know Dart well almost always learned it for Flutter, so the pool of people doing general-purpose Dart programming is thin, but the pool of Flutter engineers is a separate, well-established market.

If the project is a Flutter app, the language limitation isn't really a Dart problem, it's a Flutter one, and it arrives bundled with the framework regardless. If the plan is to pick a language for a backend service, a CLI tool, or a data pipeline, Dart is rarely the pragmatic choice next to more established options.
