When does Delphi still make sense?
Delphi is the right call when an existing VCL application already does its job and rewriting it would cost more than it saves. Object Pascal compiles to native Windows binaries with no separate runtime to install, which keeps older manufacturing, finance, and healthcare systems running without extra deployment steps. Embarcadero still ships yearly Delphi releases, so teams that already know the codebase can extend it instead of replacing it. Object Pascal also has a much smaller active developer base than mainstream .NET languages, so finding new engineers takes longer.
When is C# the better choice?
C# is the better starting point for anything built from scratch today. Microsoft ships WPF and WinForms with every .NET release, and WinUI 3, now at version 1.8, targets native Windows 11 UI directly. .NET MAUI extends the same C# codebase to macOS, iOS, and Android when a project needs more than Windows. TIOBE ranked C# fifth worldwide in July 2026 and named it language of the year for 2025, and that ranking tracks a larger pool of developers actively working in the language.
Which one fits your project?
A working Delphi application rarely needs to move to C# for technical reasons alone. The cost of rewriting a stable VCL codebase usually outweighs the benefit. A new Windows desktop product, or one that might expand beyond Windows later, gets more active framework support and a wider talent pool if it starts in C#.
