Does Unity support using Python?

Unity does not support Python for writing game code; the only fully supported scripting language is C#, compiled through Mono or IL2CPP.

This is a runtime limitation rather than a missing package. MonoBehaviour scripts, the Update loop, and the physics and rendering callbacks all run from compiled C#, and a Unity player build does not embed a Python interpreter. Unity's older UnityScript, a JavaScript-like syntax, was removed in Unity 2017.1, leaving C# as the only scripting option shipped in a build since then.

Python does appear officially in one narrower context: Unity publishes a "Python for Unity" package that embeds a Python interpreter inside the Editor, aimed at pipeline and tooling scripts for film and animation studios that connect Unity to tools like Maya or Houdini. It runs in the Editor, not in the shipped game, so it does not replace C# for gameplay logic.

Python shows up in a few other adjacent spots too. Unity ML-Agents, Unity's official reinforcement-learning toolkit, trains agents through a separate Python process that communicates with the C# runtime over a side channel during play mode. Studios also use Python outside the editor for batch asset processing or to generate source data before it gets imported into a project.

For hiring, a listing that combines "Unity" and "Python" is usually describing one of these adjacent needs, editor tooling, ML-Agents work, or asset pipelines, rather than someone writing gameplay code in Python inside Unity. Clarifying which one a role needs avoids evaluating candidates against the wrong skill.
