An on-device model is one more state the screen cannot assume
Apple's Foundation Models framework, released with iOS 26, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26 in September 2025, gives apps an on-device language model that works offline and at no inference cost. The model runs only on Apple Intelligence devices with the feature switched on, so a SwiftUI screen needs a version for phones where it is missing. How we size up a SwiftUI project before we match an engineer

Which iOS version is the app's floor?
The minimum iOS version decides which SwiftUI an engineer can use. NavigationStack needs iOS 16, and the Observation framework behind the @Observable macro needs iOS 17, according to Apple's documentation. Xcode 27, released in September 2026, debugs only on devices running iOS 17 or later. An app that still supports iOS 15 or 16 keeps older patterns such as ObservableObject and NavigationView, so we match it with engineers who have maintained them.
The yearly SDK move adds a design question. Since April 28, 2026, App Store uploads must be built with Xcode 26. Apple's engineers have confirmed that builds made with the Xcode 27 SDKs ignore the Info.plist key that keeps the look from before Liquid Glass. Standard SwiftUI controls take the new design without code changes, while custom-styled buttons, toolbars and sheets need a review before that switch.
All SwiftUI, or SwiftUI inside a UIKit app?
Few production apps are SwiftUI from the first screen to the last. Most of our SwiftUI engineers also list UIKit, and that overlap reflects the work clients bring. A mixed app needs someone who can host SwiftUI screens inside UIKit navigation and wrap UIKit views where SwiftUI has no equivalent. What separates production SwiftUI from tutorial SwiftUI?
Production SwiftUI shows in three decisions: which view owns a piece of state, how a view keeps its identity in a list, and what makes a screen redraw. A wrong identity resets a form the user was filling in. A broad dependency redraws a long list on every sensor reading. Xcode 27's SwiftUI instrument records why a layout computation was not cached, so an experienced engineer can show the cause instead of guessing.
